Kicking Off Confidence: How Girls Rugby Colorado Promotes Fun and Empowerment for Grades 2-8!

If you’ve been watching the Summer Olympics the past few weeks, you’ve likely heard about the US Women’s Rugby Team, their first ever USA medal and/or the amazing players like Ilona Maher, Naya Tapper, and Alev Kelter! I got so into watching their games and learned a lot about the sport in the process. These women are incredible and my girls were blown away watching their strength and toughness on the field.

I was even more excited while watching because I had recently learned about Girls Rugby Colorado! I had no idea there was a place for girls as young as 2nd grade to learn the fundamentals of rugby, let alone 8 different locations, in a fun, safe, empowering way. If your daughters were in awe watching the Olympics or you feel like they’d love to give it a try, keep reading to see how!

This post was sponsored by Girls Rugby Colorado. Each Girls Rugby program focuses on helping every participant lead and succeed by focusing on teaching positive core values and life skills through non-contact, flag rugby. All images were provided by Girls Rugby Colorado.

Girls Rugby Colorado

Girls Rugby Colorado has programs for girls in 2nd to 8th grade across 8 different locations. Those locations include: Sloans Lake, Littleton, Boulder, Superior, Westminster, Central Park, Aurora and Parker! It is a non-profit organization looking to provide an accessible, inclusive and affordable, empowerment-based sports programming opportunity for girls.

Each rugby season is 7 weeks in length with 1 day of practice and weekend games. Another reason I love this league…game times, dates and locations have already been set! Games alternate between the north (Broomfield – Oakhurst Park) and south (Denver – Bible Park).

What Is Flag Rugby?

To make rugby more fun at younger ages (and safer!), there is no tackling in this program. It is similar to a flag football game, but when a flag is pulled, the ball handler has a few seconds to pass the ball backwards to a teammate, or it becomes a turnover. This makes it perfect for new or experienced players at any age!

What Makes Girls Rugby Colorado Great?

The mission of Girls Rugby is to “empower girls to reach their potential through sport” and I heard that in every word of my chat with Colorado Program Manager, Meg Clarke. There is focus on fundamentals, teamwork, building confidence, challenging the players, all with the goal of them feeling empowered and part of something fun.

Clarke shared “Girls Rugby has a values based curriculum designed to help young girls feel empowered to lead, through the sport of flag rugby.” Not only will the girls learn the fundamentals of rugby, they will also experience a well-rounded practice with a word of the week, such as compassion or empowered, that they discuss with respect to the game and also in their lives.

No $$ surprises! I appreciate when programs include what you’ll need instead of the surprise email later saying that you’ll need to purchase this, this and this on top of registration. Girls Rugby Colorado takes that into account and provides new players with two jerseys, a ball, shorts, socks, and even a playbook to help them practice at home!
