Park with Shade, Fitness and Lakeside Fun in Lafayette!
By far, the most common question I get asked is “Can you recommend a good park with shade?”. Sadly, this is a tough one to answer! There just aren’t that many great playgrounds covered in shade in Colorado. However, there are a few, and Waneka Lake Park is my favorite to recommend! Blue Heron Park Delights with its Lake Views and New Playgrounds!
Have you heard of Blue Heron Park? I hadn’t! We have readers from across Colorado so I’ve been researching new playgrounds in cities far from my own. In the process, I had the pleasure of speaking with someone from Foothills Parks and Recreation District a few months ago. She alerted me to two playgrounds updated in 2019 at Christensen Meadows Park and Blue Heron Park. So, what were we to do? Go visit both of course! Washington Park Playground Looks Completely Different! Love it or Leave it?
I had heard years ago that we should visit the “boathouse playground” at Washington Park in Denver. Little did we know as we finally made it there this fall, it was removed in September 2018! Apparently, that playground had been built decades earlier and the out-dated wooden structure caused safety concerns. Luckily, we missed all of the construction and found a brand new Washington Park playground completely finished. The reason for my article’s title…many rocks around the park had “Bring our old equipment back!” written with chalk. Apparently there are some that miss the old playground 🙁 I’ll let you be the judge – check out the new playground below…

Snow Cones, Splash Pad and Fun in Northglenn!
Just off of I-25 and 120th, you’ll find E.B. Rains Jr Memorial Park. The playground is large with areas for toddlers and big kids, a sand pit and a lot of room for hanging out. We’ve been to this park a couple times now and, unfortunately, every time it has been pretty crowded (it’s a popular spot for summer camp groups). My advice is to choose a central spot to leave your snacks & drinks and then keep a close eye on your kiddos. Anyone that listens to me talk about parks knows that I’ll always be on the lookout for restrooms. How that isn’t a requirement for all large…

Broomfield, What’s a Nature Play Area??
Last fall, a brand new park opened in Broomfield, Colorado so of course we had to check it out! McKay Lake Nature Play Area is one of the most creative playgrounds we’ve seen! Address: 2301 W 138th Ave, Broomfield, CO 80023 Recommended ages: Elementary (playground & small bike park) through High School (large bike park https://broomfield.org/BikePark) Do you have kids under the age of 6? What you should know is that your kids will enjoy the park but that it isn’t the kind of place where you sit and they go play. It is amazing and creative, however, there are many parts of the park where you will lose sight…
