Walking into Possibilities Playground at Butterfield Crossing Park in Castle Rock feels magical. There are butterflies throughout the entrance, painted on the entryway, sidewalk and as a thank you to donors. Musical instruments greet you immediately and the play area opens up all around you. There are bright colors, equipment completely unique to this park, and even a stage area above.
Designed for children of all ages and abilities, there are wheelchair accessible elements like a merry go round and swing, there are sensory elements and a rock garden, and then are pieces that will challenge their strength and balance. In describing the playground, the Town of Castle Rock website shares “Imagine universally designed, sensory-rich environment that enables children of all abilities to develop physically, socially and emotionally.” The Town of Castle Rock joined forces with The Castle Rock Parks and Trails Foundation to reach the funding needed for this incredible playground. Check out their website or the information at the end of the article for more details about how you can still help!

There are so many inclusive features at Butterfield Crossing Park! Shown below is a We-Go-Round, a wheelchair accessible merry go round. Kids can sit in, stand on or push this brightly colored spinner.
Our family has visited a lot of playgrounds and we have never seen a “Pulse Table” Tennis before! This game is great for 2 to 4 players, encourages teamwork and coordination. It is a little like the ‘whack-a-mole’ game in that you hit the dot when it lights up. The middle pieces allow you to keep score or you can just play along for fun!
The “We Go Swing” shown below is an inclusive swing experience. It has a ramp for accessibility and friends can work together to make the swing move.
There are side-by-side ziplines at Butterfield Crossing Park, one for standing or sitting and the other is a chair version.
Finally, the large play structure at Possibilities Playground has so much included! There are many ways to climb on the structure and steep slides for the adventurous way down.
The playground is open, but there is still some fundraising to go. You can be part of this amazing project! Please visit https://www.getoutdoorscastlerock.org/possibilities-playground to find information about shirts for purchase or direct donations. We hope this is one of many future inclusive playgrounds for Colorado!
