Broomfield, What’s a Nature Play Area??
Last fall, a brand new park opened in Broomfield, Colorado so of course we had to check it out! McKay Lake Nature Play Area is one of the most creative playgrounds we’ve seen!
Address: 2301 W 138th Ave, Broomfield, CO 80023
Recommended ages: Elementary (playground & small bike park) through High School (large bike park https://broomfield.org/BikePark)
Do you have kids under the age of 6? What you should know is that your kids will enjoy the park but that it isn’t the kind of place where you sit and they go play. It is amazing and creative, however, there are many parts of the park where you will lose sight of your littles (see pic of tunnels 😉 ).
Unique Features: The most unique feature was the Beaver Dam, a log structure for ages 13+. It is definitely a high climb so fair warning to all the parents, it may take your breath away watching your little make their way to the top! Another unique feature of the park is the Nature Fitness Loop. A short walk to the south of the park takes you around to a handful of obstacles to get some exercise while you’re there.
Imagination Factor: This is not your typical park, this is an adventure and the possibilities for imagination are endless! Kids can take hide and seek to a whole other level and “secret spy” was a huge hit.
Bring along: There is very little shade so sunscreen is a must! If you have room, bring along your bikes to ride the dirt hills. And, maybe my most important takeaway, you need wet wipes! No matter where your kids play, they will come out with dirt on their hands, clothes, knees…everywhere. We learned the hard way as I had nothing like that with me and my daughter took a spill on the bike park, covering her legs with scrapes and dirt 🙁
Neighborhood & Places Nearby: McKay Lake has a beautiful 1.6 mile trail on the other side of the large bike path. Also nearby is Quail Creek park and a King Soopers if you need to pick something up!
Bathrooms are something I always like to mention since little ones give you next to no warning before they’re needed. At this park, there is a portable restroom near the parking lot off of Zuni.
I encourage you to check out the McKay Lake Nature Play Area!
