Unique Play Experience at Sugar Beet Park!

I was intrigued when a friend mentioned Sugar Beet Park in Fort Collins, Colorado. I had no idea what a sugar beet was, let alone how they’d design a playground around it! What we found was an extremely well done park design giving homage to the history of Fort Collins. It is like visiting an outdoor museum!

“The location of Sugar Beet Park in Fort Collins is central to three neighborhoods, known as the Tres Colonias, where many employees of the Great Western Sugar Factory lived. During the first half of the 19th century, sugar beets were harvested and processed at the factory which played a huge role in the development of industry in the city.”

Pavilion providing shaded picnic tables
Trains played a critical role in the sugar beet industry. Sugar Beet Park acknowledges this with a train station style pavilion and moving benches along the tracks.

Bathroom: Yes, there is a bathroom building.

Shade: No on the playground, however, there is a large pavilion with many picnic tables that provides a shady spot for all.

Sugar Beet Park Unique Features

What’s more unique than a giant sugar beet?! The kids were amazed at the fact that you could climb on top of it, slide down it, use it as a hideout, or even play inside with monkey bars, rope ladder and climbing wall!

As I mentioned earlier, my 9 year old daughter loved the log/ropes course. From above, it appears like the stalks of the sugar beet and it provides quite the challenge (a high challenge!).

Surrounding Area Highlights

For all of your little train enthusiasts, real train tracks are adjacent to the walking path. They’ll also love moving the benches along the tracks in the middle of the park. Be careful though, it takes a big push to get those benches moving and we saw a toddler get knocked right over!

There is a neat nature walk between the playground and train tracks. It is home to local birds, butterflies and bees, as well as a diverse set of grasses and plants. I don’t know about your kids, but mine got a bit nervous after learning there are over 900 different kinds of native bees in Colorado… It was a quick walk through!
