Trains and a Troll in Breckenridge!

We only spent a couple hours in Breckenridge this past week, but what we found was worth the trip! The High Line Railroad Park and Train Museum was a hit among all of the kids. Not only was the playground amazing with its giant train structure and water tower slide, it also had an indoor train museum AND real trains! (Keep reading, there is also a giant Troll to be found nearby!)

Address: 189 Boreas Pass Rd, Breckenridge, CO 80424

Age Recommendations: My thought, 4 and above. We were there with an almost two year old and while she could walk through the play train, most of the features were for slightly older kids. The playground is covered in sand or wood chips and there were no swings.

The playground had a little bit of everything (including a bathroom building). Slides of various heights, monkey bars, fireman pole, coal mine and bouncing cart – it was a tough park to leave!

High Line Railroad Museum: Surrounding the playground are actual train cars, including one of the few remaining narrow gauge locomotives and one you can walk inside! There is a museum building (High Line Railroad Museum hours) where the girls loved sitting in old school desks as they watched a video and looked at the railroad artifacts. The woman working at the museum shared so much history with us and explained that the train car (first picture below that looks like a giant fan) was called a snowplow but in actuality it was like a giant snow blower for the train! I would highly suggest making a trip to this park and museum the next time you’re in Breckenridge!

Troll Sighting!

Don’t forget to save a few minutes of your trip to see the giant Troll! I walk through the directions from the train park in my paragraph below or this link from gobreck.com was extremely helpful…

The starting point is just up the street past the Ice Arena so you can either walk from the train park or drive to the parking lot at 189 Boreas Pass Rd, Breckenridge, CO 80424. Keep an eye out and you’ll spot some footprints starting near the shuttle building. The kids loved following the footprints through the parking lot leading you to a new trail marked by a “Trollstigen” sign. The walk is only a few minutes, just enough to feel like you’re ‘in the mountains’. It’s a flat easy walk for littles and then…there he is! Named “Isak Heartstone”, he was created by Danish artist Thomas Dambo, and will remain in Breckenridge as long as visitors take care of him and his home.

This picture doesn’t quite show it but Isak Heartstone is HUGE! The kids loved finding him!

What would you or your kids like to see the most – the TRAINS or the TROLL? Comment below and let us know when you visit!
